Day 020

“You know,” Carter Cameron said, looking Sarah over while they walked out of the LaundroKing at dawn, “sometimes life is more than hilarious misadventures and boring hours spent at work.” He said it like it was a new thing for him to discover.

“You mean, you can do more than smile softly with that little mouth of yours?” Sarah gave him a hint of a smirk as she pulled her jacket tighter around her body. A light chill had settled down on Stereoport. She was taking full advantage of it.

“You act like I don’t ever get sad.”

“Carter, I never see you sad.”

Carter shrugged, adjusting his backpack as they trailed out from his workplace and the street that curved from it. They walked toward Helios, the dull rising sun hitting it’s curved domes.

“It’s not an emotion I like to feel.”

“Most people like to not feel vaguely anxious, but I think you often are.” Sarah reached over and threw her arm around Carter. “It’s okay, you know. But, what do you mean anyway. I thought life was made up of hilarious misadventures.”

“I think I like the soft stuff. This kind of stuff. The stuff that pads it.” He shook a hand to the street and to her.

“It sounds to me like you’re settling.”

“Maybe I am.” Carter tilted his head, giving it a thought. “Or maybe I was always a settler, looking for something to settle on.”
