Day 016

At the edge of what they considered the Coastal Causeway, facing the Atlantic Ocean, there was a series of patches filled with low concrete. Date nights ended there, early mornings began there and Davis sat there with Juliette at his side, flicking rocks into the water.

It had been another long night at Helios II. He watched her dance and it made him sigh. She came up to him after the last set and they left together.

In the darkness of the night, they ended up on the concrete.

“I hear you’re working with your sister now,” Davis offered into the silence that surrounded them. It was all lapping cool water and the harbor sounds from down the way.

“Just a few things, here or there. I’m not in the group, Davis, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“I’m a DJ, I worry about these things.”

“Mira is a DJ. And she’s also the lead bitch of the Spectres,” Juliette pointed out. She tugged her red baseball cap lowed ove her head. It was askewed, perfectly stylish and matching against her red lips.

“You shouldn’t say things like that,” Davis frowned.

“It’s true.”

“She’s actually really nice.” Davis let his eyes wander away from Juliette to the water. He flicked another rock in. He never actually learned how to skip rocks, but he knew about how to make them sink quick, fast and with a short plopping sound.

“You just think she’ll help you play bigger parties.” Juliette shifted sideways, each leg straddling the bench of concrete. “When, really, if you just decided to go out with me then I could easily help you get better gigs.”

Davis stared, blank, into the water.

“That’s too easy,” He said after a moment. “That’s way too easy. What work is there in that.”

“If the crowd empties out, then you know you’re sunk.” Juliette threw a rock for emphasis. It was big and heavy and landed against the water with a thunk.

“You’re not funny.”

“You’re just using it as an excuse not to go out with me.”

It was partly true. Davis said nothing about it.

“Don’t worry though, Davis. One day I’ll get tired of chasing you and I’ll find someone else. Then you’ll be sad.”

“Are you sure about that?” Davis threw his other leg over the cement the same way she did. Facing her, he smiled as best as he could – a thin line that edged up on one side of his mouth.

“I hope so. I don’t plan on being alone forever.”
